Ugh. We have crosses in every single fucking classroom. Recently there was a news story about an atheist teacher who wanted to take one of them down. And there was this mess about the cross in the parliament building... sigh.

I pretty much have the same opinion, the full veiled face just looks strange and impersonal to me, then again I work with one angry bitch who's face would be improved by a veil so it could go either way.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

I went to both private and public schools, and I don't recall being able to wear anything on my head---such as a hat---in either of them. I would say if the rule already leans toward a policy such as that, which doesn't allow other types of headgear, then headscarves shouldn't be excepted; the religious point is moot, but to add to what others have said I don't think that the state has an interest in seeing any religion promoted in the dress of students or teachers whose business is conducted at the expense of public funds, and where a code of attire is already expected to be enforced. I've made the point elsewhere but the state has no interest in endorsing any religion---whether it can boast of a long historical tradition or has popular support---and since religion is not defined by anything other than a person's irrational whims, anyone can claim special treatment on account of whatever they wish to call sacred. Once you allow one, you cannot deny others.

I like it, PT. For once, Jesus is depicted as appropriately swarthy.
As for the teacher in Germany, I don't really have a problem with the head scarf for the same reason that I wouldn't have a problem with a public school teacher wearing a cross on a necklace. In my view, that would fall under free exercise and free expression -- provided there is no evidence the teacher is crossing the line and overtly or implicitly stumping for her religion in a public classroom. And if that line is crossed, the teacher and the public school she represents should be held accountable and heads should roll.
