Extremists target Tunisian museum
"TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — The radical Islamic State Group claimed responsibility Thursday for the attack on a famed Tunis museum that left 23 people dead, scores of tourists wounded and upended the country's struggling tourism industry."

Quote:Culture Minister Latifa Lakhdar gave a defiant press conference in the museum, where blood trails still stained the ground after tourists were gunned down amid the Roman-era mosaics.

"They are targeting knowledge. They are targeting science. They are targeting reason. They are targeting history. They are targeting memory, because all these things mean nothing in their eyes," she told reporters. "There is only their reactionary, very backward and sclerotic ideology."

And they're also targeting innocents and the Tunisian tourist industry.

"The Islamic State jihadist group on Thursday claimed responsibility for an attack on Tunisia’s national museum that killed at least 21 people."

Quote:In an audio message posted online, IS said “two knights from the Islamic State… heavily armed with automatic weapons and grenades, targeted the Bardo Museum.”

It threatened more attacks, saying: “What you have seen is only the start.”

There are people wounded and missing.

Apart from the carnage of innocents, the museum aspect of this tragedy really bothers me. I know that the destruction of culture and history by the extremists is nothing new, but I feel like every time it happens we should have a minute of silence for all the damaged heritage.

I'd rather have a few hundred more sorties per week over their positions in Syria. Kill these vermin.

Forget the museum aspect. Their goal was to hit where it hurts the most. And that's the tourist industry of Tunesia. The same procedure as 1997 in Egypt with the Hatschepsut tomb.

The biggest mistake is to take extremists for fools.

Nothing new in that. All theists are ignorant fucks deep down.

Quote: "And in those days there appeared in Alexandria a female philosopher, a pagan named Hypatia, and she was devoted at all times to magic, astrolabes and instruments of music, and she beguiled many people through Satanic wiles. And the governor of the city [Orestes] honoured her exceedingly; for she had beguiled him through her magic. And he ceased attending church as had been his custom....And he not only did this, but he drew many believers to her, and he himself received the unbelievers at his house....And thereafter a multitude of believers in God arose under the guidance of Peter the magistrate—now this Peter was a perfect believer in all respects in Jesus Christ—and they proceeded to seek for the pagan woman who had beguiled the people of the city and the prefect through her enchantments. And when they learnt the place where she was, they proceeded to her and found her seated on a (lofty) chair; and having made her descend they dragged her along till they brought her to the great church, named Caesarion. Now this was in the days of the fast. And they tare off her clothing and dragged her through the streets of the city till she died. And they carried her to a place named Cinaron, and they burned her body with fire. And all the people surrounded the patriarch Cyril and named him 'the new Theophilus'; for he had destroyed the last remains of idolatry in the city."

Except that the knowledge part doesn't come into it. They're targetting tourists, who happened to be in a museum, the only significant income Tunisia actually has.

My god these people make me sick. They are just shit scared of reality because it won't validate their delusions. Which is common, but at least most theists won't kill people because of it.

Ignorant and backwards, yes. Stupid, no. That's why they're dangerous -- they know what they're doing.

That's exactly what they want to happen. It will give them for fuel for the "us and them mentality". Besides, if you believe you're going to go to heaven death doesn't seem like a bad prospect I'm sure. It's a shame suicide is considered Haram by many because if it wasn't then it would stop so much bloodshed. My country is in bad shape so I think leaping into another war is so irresponsible. War is what caused this problem in first place (an illegal war).

It seems that people are aware of the damage the terrorists were trying to do to Tunisia's tourism industry and are responding.

People Worldwide Are Pledging To Visit Tunisia After Brutal Museum Attack

Quote:As Tunisia mourns the victims of the deadly attack on the National Bardo Museum on Wednesday, many have expressed fears that the assault may have a devastating impact on the country's resurgent tourism industry. But people around the world have responded to those fears with a resilient message, pledging to travel to the North African nation this summer.

This, of course, doesn't mean anything yet, since everyone can post a picture. But the fact that this is a thing is a good place to start.
