Seriously, you have no fucking idea why I joined this forum. It had nothing to do with FB, and I stayed because I had enough time between joining it and joining my local atheist group to have established friendships. If you think this place is somehow more intellectually stimulating than Facebook, you've got serious issues. All internet sites are only as good as the people who make them and who you interact with. If you're struggling to find something appealing and stimulating on FB, then again, sir, I say that you should either 1) stop being a smug douchebag, 2) find better friends, 3) find better groups to join, or 4) a combination of the first three.

Farther back than that.  We used to access the internet (in a rudimentary way) over dialup using UUCP back in the 80's.  The web didn't even exist yet.
