And that is why the rest of us have to pay $24 instead of $12.

Come on, you don't think the guys in charge of that stuff would be using piracy as justification for charging more no matter what we do? I'm all for buying media,  but calling this a situation that exclusively pirates are influencing is entirely naive. In many cases, piracy is a service problem, one that could easily be fixed by instituting the fair price first, in any case. Just look at the success of Netflix: content at a competitive rate gets customers, and I don't think it's fair to say there's no overlap between Netflix users and pirates.

It doesn't matter what they charge. Either you pay it and have a right to it, or you don't. It doesn't cease to be theft if you steal candy because the grocery has decided to charge two million dollars per ounce. And unlike food, there's never a moral reason to steal it because you don't actually need it.

My need to have to spend all my money on groceries, leaving nothing for entertainment unless I want to watch paint dry, does necessitate me pirating.  Perhaps if we were all rich, we could all be entertained equally.

Not having as much as other people is not a right to steal.  If it were, 99.99999999 % of us would have the right to steal.  And entertainment is not a necessity.

It does not help the situation. If they could sell twice as many there would be justification to lower prices. As it is, out of 10+ acquaintances, I am the only one that purchases DVDs. (The best part is that I am the only atheist in the group.) How many people do you know that purchase rather than steal? Now look at it from the supply aspect, for every one they sell, 10 are stolen? What is their motivation to lower the price?

My experience shows that the people who don't have a problem pirating
intellectual property belonging to others get really cranky when theirs is stolen.
Either that or they don't produce anything to steal in the first place.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat? Huh

But that's not how it works.  xD
The prices would remain high no matter how much they sold, because they figure if the price is high and people are buying there is no justification for lowering it to make less.
