As I said..if it helps - have at it. I think it's amusing that the people in the narrative are constantly pleading with god for slightly less than batshit responses- almost as if they can tell the difference when god can't. : shrugs :

If they could, why would they need to be told to take care of raped women and widows instead of leaving them on their own to die?

In those societies, it was about survival of the fittest. If you couldn't provide for yourself or have someone care enough about you to provide for your well-being, then too bad.
It's a natural human response to care about them, but it's not a natural response to actually do something about it. That still applies in our current society.

Obliviousness? I know of that being the Law and it was better than the alternative. That's not saying much with our current societal viewpoint, but it was the best for that era.
It actually wasn't too long ago that a similar viewpoint was common in America...if you knocked up a woman, it was automatically assumed you would marry her regardless of your actual feelings towards her.
