People have sacrificed themselves for a lot of things. But I'll grant you religion has one of the highest body counts.
Some people are scared of the possibility of god not existing.
Not all religions require the existence of a God or gods to be self-fulfilling.
To answer the question, from someone who used to be much more into religion, it brought me a great sense of joy and completeness. It also had a great sense of community brought together by a common love of both God and each other as if we were of the same blood family.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
