I can see what you guys are saying here. I personally can't base my whole life on the possiblity that these 'holy' books are telling the truth per se. What I can be sure of are the things like: love your neighbour as yourself, do not murder etc. These things are consistent throughout time and belief systems.

Yes, I think that for a social group to survive, those "Golden Rules" must be a part of their code of living, if you will. It follows, because any group without such rules would eventually collapse in on itself and not pass on those rules to any descendants.

I agree. These are good human morals that have evolved and stuck with us because they benefit most people in societies. They didn't originate in any holy book though, and that is an important thing to remember. Morality is the result of years of human trial and error.
