An Opened Minded Evangelist, Breath of Fresh Air

An Opened Minded Evangelist, Breath of Fresh Air
A somewhat surprising but nice breath of fresh air:
Quote:Danny Akin, one of the most prominent leaders in the Baptist Church, has made a video for Openly Secular.

Evangelical Christians and secular people are not typically known for sticking up for each other. So why has Dr. Danny Akin, President of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and one of the most prominent leaders in the Baptist Church, , supporting the campaign’s mission?

It comes down to respect. :

That's very refreshing, but don't his words about equality ring hollow when he believes that god's perfect justice entails torturing us for eternity?
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Sounds much better than the usual. But yes, that is always a problem. He still endorses a book which makes it very clear of his religion's opinion of outsiders. Until they remove these references from the book, they are supporting that message of hatred. It's more offensive than almost anything I could say to a religious person, ever. Luckily, I don't give a shit what garbage is written in there. It's just sad people would support it.

I'm not sure if he supports the criticism of ideas, as well as the exchange?

I agree with the message, respect the person, even if you don't respect their beliefs. Kind of like when I was a teacher, it was about criticizing the behaviour, not the student.

That was a nice step in the right direction but I apparently disagree with both him and openly secular on one issue he mentioned.  Certain views, such as racism or homophobia, should be 'put down' and yes, sometimes people who hold those negative views should be criticized.

He wouldn't have been an evengalist if he had been open minded. Opened minded evengalist is about as oxymoronic as humanitarian extermination camp commandant. What he said is a step in the right direction much as a extermination camp commandant giving out candies to children he is about to kill might be a step in the right direction. But don't count on any more steps such that his total progress might make any actual difference.

And that step he has taken is blasphemous.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Yes, religion takes a dim view of compromise.
