Oh, hello hello everyone!
I'm a middle-aged, female, tattooed lesbian atheist.   And I'm also the organist for a Catholic Church.

I need intelligent conversation!!!      Big Grin
I was raised Southern Baptist.  (Yeah, I know, YIKES!)  AND I was stupid enough to get music degrees in college.  (Double yikes!)
It's very hard for a self-employed musician to survive without a church job.  But you know what they say: if you want to become
an atheist, just work for a church.  It's not very long before you think "does he even know what he just said?" having to listen to
sermons and bible readings every weekend. Not to mention that church workers are usually JUST AWFUL to each other.

I might quote that old button "my karma ran over my dogma"!  It did.

I'm happy to announce that I have recently acquired full-time gainful employment, and will be financially able to escape from 
the loony bin soon.  

I'm a huge fan of Sagan, Hitchens, deGrasse Tyson, Hawking, Dawkins, Kelly . . . if you can suggest any good books or great
groups to join, I would appreciate it!   Good to "meet" you!                   drfuzzy

Welcome! I was raised in East Tennessee as a United Methodist (just as loony), and have a bunch of music degrees too! I never (professionally) did music in church, though; I was a church secretary for a time, however Smile

I've played the piano in churches too, although not professionally. Had to inhale really hard to stop myself laughing when they got to the preaching part!

I thought about playing in a church band for a while. Not playing with anybody was taking its toll, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:

Welcome, it's a funny feeling being an atheist in a church, just looking around at everyone and pondering what's going on their minds, and how all these people could suckered into believing this. But, I was one of those people.. Hitchens is the man! I got a nice Hitchslap to wake my ass out of the bullshit I was believing.

I am no fan of thinking just because you don't have a job based on your college degree, that you wasted the learning. A well rounded society depends on everyone having an education, no matter if they end up in their field or not. I am a poet and an atheist debater/activist online. Livable wages and cheap or free higher education benefits everyone, no matter where they end up. Most people, if lucky, get to work with people they like, but most people always end up working for others. I think it is more important that you value your education than to think you got nothing out of it.
