A purely logical kind of solution?(That's the best way i can explain.)

When someone says that the answer can be found if you touch and see the bulbs for heat effects they are making assumptions that the bulb is within reach.
I don't want that kind of a solution..
The kind of solution i want is like purely mathematical or logical(I don't know how to explain it better. Sad)

I have a friend who introduced me to this problem. He had worked as a corporate head hunter and would pose the problem to prospective executives over dinner, not because he cared whether they could solve it but to see how they reacted to a problem that bedeviled them.
