RE: Favorite Fantasy books and writers?
David Gemmell was a favorite of mine when I was younger, especially his series on Troy. Really excellent and different fantasy.

and of course George RR Martin.

SnakOilWarrior: Thank you bringing up a series that combines science fiction and fantasy well. I hadn't heard of "The Fortress series" before. I'll have to pick those up sometime soon along with a couple of the other awesome sounding fantasy series you mentioned of. I'd been meaning to look into the Discworld series for a while.

I also wholeheartedly agree about the Narnia and Prydain series as I still enjoy them also.

I've only just started on the "His Dark Materials" trilogy also.

Only if you like the idea of reading the exact same book 14 times.

The first one was quite good. The second was ok. All the rest were the second one with different details.

Actually, that's unfair. I haven't read 13-15. I can't see that he would stop mailing it in as long as the paychecks keep coming though.

Whoah... The Fortress series is pure fantasy. Sorry if I wasn't clear. I was just pointing out that C.J. Cherryh writes superb sci-fi as well as superb fantasy. Most authors who try their hand at both usually fail hard at one or the other.

Holy crap! How could I have forgotten "Fablehaven?!?" Yes, most certainly epic.

And, speaking of epic (and sci-fi/fantasy crossover), Conor Kostick's "Avatar Chronicles" are amazing, especially the first book, "Epic." Sci-fi and fantasy neatly packaged together.
