To be fair, put ourselves in his shoes. Would we do anything at all differently? We have an entire nation under our thumb and can get basically anything we want, all of the time. We're told from birth that we have a seemingly divine right to rule (what king or queen has ever thrown away that right?), your entire family has the monopoly, and all we have to do is nod and play along.

Like, don't get me wrong, his country is in poverty while he stuffs his fat fucking face every night and he doesn't actually do anything to better his country. But seriously, why would he? What does he care? He already has it all. Everyone worships him no matter what, he's got a bangin' wife and a dapper trim. Anyone in his shoes would also keep the status quo IMO, sure we could suddenly grow a conscience from nowhere but I don't think the environment he's in exactly promotes that.

Not making excuses for the twat by any stretch, but I do find it a little strange that most everyone just simplistically places blame solely on this one person, and just views him as a maniacal tyrant grubbing for power, when it wasn't even him who gained such power in the first place and he probably has to do very little to maintain it. In actuality it's everyone else around him who does these things. Seems to me, and people might disagree on this, that he's just playing the card he's been dealt.

It's interesting to me nonetheless.

Because farming salmon in neat stacks along the wall - as opposed to the wasteful, western way, in tanks of water - was all his idea. Great Leader is very eco-conscious...

Something tells me this is sarcasm. But I'm not sure...

Oh yeah, I agree - I don't for a moment believe he's anything more than a glorified figurehead, but he provides a convenient figure of reverance for the populace whilst the ones who really hold the power grow rich and content. It seems like a near-perfect system - provided you happen to be in the Inner Party, of course.

It's basically like every despot in history really. With the likes of someone like Mugabe though (just as an example), the only time anyone pays attention is when something really drastic happens, like them falling over at the age of 90 and seemingly breaking protocol. I think the only thing that makes NK different is that it's very eccentric in how it portrays itself, all of the time, to the rest of the world and its own people.

When you look at it, it says a lot more about our own media, and our own people, that we're more concerned with a ruler like this because he's eccentric, and the whole show seems weird, than with leaders like Mugabe who've been doing (arguably) far worse things with their power for many years.

I'm kind of surprised that there hasn't been an attempt on his life or an overthrow attempt by his military. Maybe there has been, we'll just never know.

I'm not, he's doing exactly what the people around him want him to do. Those outside such a sphere of influence don't have any real power in order to do anything, and if anyone even watches non-NK TV they could get put in a death camp, so I'm not at all surprised his position is so comfortable. I've seen people say it's only a matter of time before he's overthrown. I'm more surprised that people think that is ever going to happen and I'm not sure where they get the idea.

So, he's the puppet and those around him are the unseen puppet masters? If that's the case I can see keeping him.

Don't look behind the curtain?

Maybe he's been replaced by a bunch of fat midgets in an over-coat?
