Julius Deutsch founded the first Austrian republican army in Austria in 1919. He fought the Austrian fascists in the Civil war of 1934 and moved to Spain where he was the Republican commander of Bilbao. Being a lifelong socialist, he didn't flee to the Soviet Union but to the United States, siince he also was a lifellong democrat. I simply know myself. I'm not the most courageous person. Though, given that being jewish warranted a certain death sentence these days, there was nothing to lose. And even though my grandmothers haven't been jewish, I'm still half jewish.

The reason why I'm posting this now is, that our xenophobic anti muslim rightwingers will probably win the next election. I will take the streets when they do, together with the ones not wanting to live in that kind of environment. It also gives you some kind of clue why I always stand up against verbal bigotry of any kind.

'Tis no wonder that you are so well-informed on history; with forebears like that, not studying it would be tantamount to disrespecting their labors.

My grandfather too fought fascism; he died in 1943, a navigator in a B-17, somewhere over northern Germany.

I never really got on or liked my dad. (Neither did any other member of the family) ..He's long gone now, as is mum.
But as a young kids I remember him showing us what looked like an ancient piece of paper folded for so long it had sticky tape holding it together.

It was a letter of recognition for his efforts fighting in Greece against the Nazi occupation.
It was signed by the queen.
