If you want ancient mythical mumbo jumbo, read the hindu kalki one.
One guy, One horse, One sword... will chop off the heads of all (vaguely defined)evil doers on earth, and then set the universe on fire, and then recreate everything from scratch, and the date of this have already been written down(vaguely).
Were they expecting the planet's population to be a few hundred?

If anyone of us survives the 21st century we should seriously think about finding a new home. Wikipedia tells us in 600 million years or so there will be no plants left. Yes, we would all die of depression because we wouldn't be able to water any plants anymore.

Well, you know what they say about Wikipedia...
Anyway, 600 million years is a long while, I wouldn't say it's an absolute necessity to look for another home in the 22nd century unless we really continue fucking things up on Earth that much, although I'd like to see us exploring the stars, I'd say it'll be another few hundred years at least before we find a new planet to live on. And that's being very optimistic IMO.

If I'm being alert it's because I'm thinking of how difficult it would be to find a viable planet in a different solar system and then travel to it. We would have to put our society in order and start focusing as a global society on advancing science and techonology if we ever hope to make it - that's what I think. We would also have to get rid of mass stupidity, educate everyone, feed everyone - basically make life liveable, comfortable and nice for everybody just so much more people could contribute to the advancement of our civilization.

I can't quite remember the name but I read a good sci-fi book recently which is about a ship full of humans trying to survive in space but to go anywhere they have to stay and breed in space for a few generations, however without the earth's diverse ecosystem, it doesn't go too well and each successive generation gets physically and mentally weaker.

In what context? No matter if humans do or don't kill ourselves off by polution or war, a meteor can wipe humans out if big enough, but the earth core will run out of energy and even after that our son will die and that will be the end of the planet.
But there is no sky hero vs arch villian fighting over this.

This is about the planet, not about humanity. I'm not sure you're able to blow the planet up.

Was it the novelization of Wall-E?

Don't worry, my friend. If this be the end, then so shall it be.
