Great responses, folks, thank you! Yes, after a lot of internet searching, I tend to agree: there is no real definition, and if someone tries to quantify "spirituality", they essentially turn it into a religion. It then starts merging into a lot of New-Agey crystal energy, pyramid power, aura and chakra colors STUFF.  -- Which is what makes me think it can become a "god" alternative.  

I do like Rhondazvous' take on the subject.  -- We all have moments where we are aware of a moment of beauty, or of inspiration, and we can use these observations for our own betterment or gain.  I'm drawn to Buddhist philosophy, for example . . . but I will not call myself a Buddhist, or make reference to "Lord Buddha" as some of my friends do.  That's about as "spiritual" as I'm going to let myself get.  And don't we need another term anyway?  I don't believe in spirits!  How about a searcher of wisdom?

I didn't see you rambling. I saw you expressing your insight. And I agree. the term spirituality implies something that it's not even about. Searcher of Wisdom is good. Because different people are at different places in their lives they won't all approach wisdom from the same angle. some will go left. Some will go right. And all will find what they need to get their if they are centered.

I am eclectic, taking what I need from different sources. But you know what I often find? No matter where I look or who I ask, at the end of the day I usually just look inside myself for the answer because I know what's going on in my life better than anyone. Advice is to be considered, not canonized.

If someone scientifically minded uses the word, I assume they are using it as a metaphor for the human experience, our journeys through life, how we relate to the universe, etc.

If a non-scientific person uses it, I assume they think they are talking about something real but it is actually unsupported nonsense. It could be pretty much anything.

Non scientific people (people who haven't developed the use of the left side of their brains and just go with their emotions) often use the word to mean an escape from reality. so they often employ the use of mind altering drugs, retreats away from civilization and seldom does it have any effect on how they treat other people or lead them to deal with their emotions in a realistic way.

Right, and sometimes using mind-altering drugs gets them in touch with their "spiritual side" in which they learn profound truths. Truths which sound like gibberish to us lot.
