True... I have a life >_^

I basically just played other than that. I basically never went out and never on my own lol.

MoO2 is indeed a great game- one of the very best imho. I spent several years addicted to it. I was also addicted to Alpha Centauri at the time, so I sort of had dual game habit.

The great things about both of those games was that:
- you could design your own units
- there were multiple winning strategies
and
- you could play with the variables for map generation

Leading to many many possiblities.

I didn't play MoO2 as much as MoO, but from what I did play, i came to the conclusion that custom races were cheap Sleepy My other complaint with it was the space battles, it took up too much time and space when done in 2d Confused If it could be updated to 3D, then the system would be awesome, with each ship realistically taking up space ^_^ Aside from those though: a fantastic game indeed ^_^

http://www.warpcore.org/~sirian/moo1/index.html <-- best MoO resource I've found... if you are a previous MoO player, you will read this and be very hungry to play again Tiny Tiger If you are not a MoO player, then if you read it you might understand just why I am obsessed with it Tiny Tiger

Here is a summation of MoO for those who don't want to read through the entire blog Tongue http://www.warpcore.org/~sirian/moo1/player.html

Well, the customized races did allow you to win easily on 'impossible' level, if thats what you were really into (Creative + tech advantages = win; also Telepathic + other stuff = win). Yeah, I agree- pretty Sleepy. More interestingly, you could take less (possibly a lot less) than your full quota of points and then try to win on impossible.

And you could also try novel strategies. For example, I remember designing a race that was maxed out for ground combat (normally something that you'd buy down ). The plan was to use shuttles to capture the Orion ships when they turned up, and then use the Orion technology to conquer everyone else. It worked...sort of- not an optimal strategy, for sure, but interesting all the same.

The space combat simply gave a big advantage to the human, since the AI sucked at space combat.

I only played the original MoO a few times. When I decided to buy it, MoO2 came out, so I bought that instead. And I 've never played MoO3 at all- from what I've heard its a very bad game.

MoO3 does not exist. There was 'recently' some little bugger of a game that called itself "MoO3"... but it is not MoO3.

This is true... but when a person given the option to excel, they will usually do that Tongue

You could capture enemy ships? Confused

I love novel strategies ^_^

The space battles in MoO2 were definitely a lot more tactically designed than those of MoO... but the VI in both games handles space tactics horribly. I don't really care for the ship stacking of the first MoO (however much simpler it makes the battles), but I also don't care for how messy a lot of ships (in particular small ones) are in MoO2. The only really good system I can think of (and a realistic one to boot) would be to translate the battlemap into 3D Tongue Otherwise I prefer the first one for simplicity and ease of management Smile

Shame you didn't get both Tongue Oh how I envy any intelligent windows user right now >_< MoO and MoO2 for not even an hour's 'minimum wage'! Angry It's just unfair to me, that's what it is Tongue

Yeah, well I never played it anyway. A friend of mine who was a fellow MoO2 fan bought it- said it was one of the worst games he'd ever played.

Indeed. But getting really good at anything, even a computer game, is pretty cool. TBH I don't think that the big problem with MoO2 was race design- the ship design system was way more unbalancing. If you design your ships properly (think: autofire AP beam weapons), and know how to play the tactical combat, then the AI will get massacred regardless of what race you're playing. The pre-designed ships are frankly very bad indeed, and thats what the AI uses.

Well you could, its just that there normally wasn't much point. Shuttles are expensive and take up a lot of space that you could be using for autofire AP beam weapons. Missiles and fighters are a complete waste too btw- they're too slow. Your ideal ships will have such overwhelming firepower that the AI fleet gets shredded in a few turns- i.e. before your missiles could even reach their targets.

Yeah, 3D space battles would've been awesome.

Talking with you about MoO2 really makes me want to play the game again. Maybe I'll check out that site that you posted and buy it.

To sum up "MoO3", one could say that it is a bunch of fantastic ideas thrown together to make one big sloppy mess.

The autofire can be overpoweringly nice... or it can be just so much wasted space. You have to have very nice battle computers to pull it off well... and if your enemies have good shields: you may as well have fired 2 of those three times in the opposite direction Wink (At least this holds true in MoO... I don't think it is different in MoO2, but I don't know :S) *addendum: and for the space it takes up, one might as well have put in more weapons or the like for a similar effect*

If there is one good thing I can say about MoO2's race design... it is that they "fixed" (read: nerfed) the Psilon Smile

It sounds like a good strategy to me... especially if you can steal tech by doing it :S Wait... the AI had ships weak enough to be destroyed before your missile-boats even hit them?! Shock Yikes... this surely can't be impossible? :S

They'd only really be awesome if the VI can handle it well Tongue Of course.. while we're dreaming, let's say "multiplayer" Angel

6$ for MoO and MoO2 on a system you can still get? If I had only heard it from someone, my first question would not have been "where?"... but rather "what are you smoking...?". I honestly can't fathom not getting it if you can play it... I hate windows... Sad

RE: ... I hate Windows...
I'm now the proud owner of MoO and MoO2. A bit of a steal at $6. Getting them to work on 64-bit Vista proved to be less than straightforward, but I'm there now. Big Grin

I've got stuff to do tomorrow, so I don't think that starting a game now would be a very bright move. I know myself too well!

Will probably have a game tomorrow, though. Its been around 10 years since I last played (maybe more- time flies), so I suspect that I'll be a bit rusty. My plan: MoO2, impossible level, customized races with full points. Will probably adopt a tech-max strategy (so creative, artifacts homeworld etc), since iirc thats the simplest way to win. We'll see how it goes- I'm sorta half hoping that the AI will kick my ass into a black hole, but realistically bits more likely to be the other way round.

Anyway, cheers to Sae for the link, and I'll let you know what happens.
