Will probably have a game tomorrow, though. Its been around 10 years since I last played (maybe more- time flies), so I suspect that I'll be a bit rusty. My plan: MoO2, impossible level, customized races with full points. Will probably adopt a tech-max strategy (so creative, artifacts homeworld etc), since iirc thats the simplest way to win. We'll see how it goes- I'm sorta half hoping that the AI will kick my ass into a black hole, but realistically bits more likely to be the other way round.

Well, it has been ~10 years... so it's a valid possibility that you will get your ass kicked Smile I hope you get pitted against runaway Psilon, Klackon, and Silicoid empires... Devil

Quote:Anyway, cheers to Sae for the link, and I'll let you know what happens.

Indeed, my intention was to make people in my little world aware of this incredible deal so they could enjoy 2 amazing games for an absurdly low price ^_^ I'm quite interested in all the little details of your "back to the game" game... I would probably be very entertained just watching you make what choices you do, or reading about them after the fact Tongue

Can't you get access to a pc at all?

You clearly have psychic powers Sae, because what happened in game #1 was pretty much that- I started out between the Psilons and Klackons. The Klackons were much too close. Panic

The inevitable war with the Klackons broke out. I was doing okay, or at least not losing any planets, although I did lose some ships. Out of necessity, my entire fleet was dealing with the Klackons. At which point the lovely Psilons launched a massive attack on me. Game abandoned. No way could I fight both of them at once.

Q: So... Why did I lose?

A: - My micro-management skills are for sure not as good as they used to be.
- I've almost completely forgotten how the tactical sub-game works. Learning again now.
- I spent too much time and money building infrastructure. Should've build fewer research labs/ supercomputers and more ships (at the end I was still well ahead of the Psilons on tech- a lot of good that did me).
- My grasp of diplomacy is not what it used to be. Should've gifted the Klackons lots of useless tech (easy if you're Creative). That would've at least postponed the war.
- My research strategy is rusty too. Sometimes went for the wrong techs. Nothing big, but it all counts.

On balance, I'm quite pleased that I didn't win. It means that I get to have some really awesome challenging games.

Will start game #2 tonight. Hoping for an easier starting position, but I'll take whatever comes.

Big Grin But no Silicoids...? Or would that have been overkill? ^_^

The Klackon are usually Xenophobic... it's very hard to make (and stay) friends with them. :S I think you should add this reason in:

-Started between both the Klackon and the Psilon... hardly a friendly spot to be occupying. Smile

You could try getting the cheapest possible 2nd hand PC. MoO doesn't require much processing power, and would run on practically anything. Of course your PC would be useless for doing anything other than playing MoO or other old games. (BTW: did you ever play Alpha Centauri? That was another old game that was very good indeed; if you got a 2nd hand PC you could play that too Smile).

No, not in that one. But see below.

Xenophobic is an understatement. The point is that you can postpone wars with them with gifts of useless tech. This buys you time to research techs like the wonderful Structural Analyzer (x2 damage to beams after penetrating shields; combine with autofire AP and SP if you can get them, and you're looking at truly hideous amounts of damage).

The start wasn't good, thats for sure. But no excuses. If I'd played better I still might have won.

Anyway, game #2 is now underway. I decided to play customized Psilons this time (used to play customized Trilarians, as I did in the first game), purely so that I wouldn't have to play against the fuckers. Also decided to play a huge galaxy with 8 players (i.e. max for both).

So far, so good. Our rivals are: Sakkara, Silicoids, Gnolam, Bulrathi, Humans, Elerians, plus one that I haven't met yet. I'm neighbours with the Sakkara, Bulrathi and Elerians, and sort of neighbours with the Silicoids and Gnolam (started out quite centrally). Predictably, the Sakkara and Silicoids have expanded like crazy, and both of 'em hate my guts. We have a sustantial tech lead, and this time round we're armed to the fucking teeth. Our fleet is roughly the same size as the Silicoids, though smaller than the Sakkara; everyone else has fewer ships. And we have structural analyzers.

Planning to launch a war against the Sakkara in maybe 10 yrs time (have timed my ship production for this).

Sorry, been away a few days playing Dragon Age Origins Smile <-- Awesome game... I don't think as much of the expansion so far though... Sad I really just want to run back into my friends, and the characters in the beginning of the expansion just don't bring the same sense of character as the ones of the first game... Undecided

Probably could... though second hand PC doesn't sound as much fun as shelling out for Alienware... :S

I never did play Alpha Centauri.

Postpone war with the Klackons?! That's not even right... did they change the tech model MoO2? :S

*giggles* I forget... did they increase the size of the galaxy in MoO2? 8 players at once sounds insane and fun ^_^

There is no such thing as a border when you are neighbor to the Silicoid Tiger How did the war with the Sakkra (and in fact the entire game, if you remember it) go? Smile

Never played it. I mainly play more historical games these days. Went through a phase of playing Civ4; now mainly play EU3.

Quote:Probably could... though second hand PC doesn't sound as much fun as shelling out for Alienware...

I never did play Alpha Centauri.

Well, I certainly enjoy having a very powerful (quad core) PC. I'm a bit of a tech junkie in that respect. Alpha Centauri was good- imo the best of the Civ-type games. Like MoO there were viable multiple strategies for winning (at least 3 completely different ones that I can remember). And unlike Civ4, it actually made sense to build wonders on the difficult levels.

Quote:Postpone war with the Klackons?! That's not even right... did they change the tech model MoO2?

I can't really comment, since I can't remember what the original MoO tech model was.

Quote:*giggles* I forget... did they increase the size of the galaxy in MoO2? 8 players at once sounds insane and fun ^_^

In MoO2, galaxy size and number of players are 2 of the variables that you can play around with- you set them at the beginning of every game. Personally, I've always liked it most with 8 players (the maximum). Being able to change the variables gives you a more varied gaming experience.

Quote:There is no such thing as a border when you are neighbor to the Silicoid How did the war with the Sakkra (and in fact the entire game, if you remember it) go?

The Silicoid attacked the Sakkara shortly after I did! This was bad, since it meant that I got to fight the Sakkara fleet, and the Silicoids got to capture all of the undefended bits of their empire. Surprising smart play by the AI.

Anyway, it ended up with the galaxy divided up between us Psilons and the Silicoids. They managed to steal some key techs (including Xentronium armor, which I'd got when I captured Orion), so their military was pretty damn hard. I won by attacking Antares. A bit of a cop-out really, but after the first game I was very keen to get a win under my belt, and war with the Silicoids looked risky.

Since then, I've played 3 more games- won 1 and lost 2, so the total is W2 L3. My main problem seems to be the Psilons. Every time I've played against them, I've lost the game. The Psilon problem boils down to this: with the Psilons in the game I end up in a tech race with them and a ships/ colonies race with the Sakkara/ Silicoids/ Klackons. I can win one race, but not both, and consequently lose. Without the Psilons, I don't have to put so much emphasis on tech. I can stay ahead of the other races, and still build enough ships and colonies.

I certainly didn't have this problem 10 years ago- I always used to play the Trilarians or the Humans (customized). So pretty clearly, my skill at MoO2 ain't what it used to be. Hopefully, I'll be able to re-learn and triumph over the Psilon menace.
