The Papacy has been scary political since the C1st CE. For centuries no monarch could rule in Europe without church approval and could be removed if they upset the Pope. Eg The Pope of the day said it was an act of grace for any member of the faithful to murder Queen Elizabeth 1, what with her being a heretic and all.

Societies all over the world are indeed fortunate the various flavours of Christianity have lost their heretic and witch burning privileges,or there would be auto da feys all over the place. They'd probably be televised and would be wildly popular. These days the cretins have to settle for Jerry Springer, reality Television and murdering the odd abortionist. Must be very hard on some Southerners, who are no longer even allowed to lynch black people. Angel Cloud

Don't forget about Fox News! They've sure earned their place in the scary political bullshit views hall of fame, too!

Nice - but maybe they should have someone knowing german proof-read it. Or is this part of the joke?
(Should be "Die amtlichen Nachrichten - Führung der Heimat".)

I doubt many modern Americans can even read German (which used to be very different at one time).

This is because we are not currently in an elongated World War with them, or did I miss a memo?

I can read german very well... but I've got no way to understand what it is I am reading Sleepy I doubt many modern Americans can comprehend German on a common basis (in the intended sense by the german speaker/writer)... I think a good number of Americans can read it and sometimes also recognize it as German Wink

C'mon, man. It's FOX. They think all you have to do is pronounce the W's as V's and you're speaking German.

Up to 10% of the early settlers in the US were of German heritage, which meant quite a large portion of the settlers read and spoke German as opposed to English. Even our country that is next door to Germany (I happen to be there right now) doesn't have as many residents that can speak the language.

In the Civil War the Union XI Corps was composed of German immigrants. Their original commander was Franz Sigel and included such generals as Adophe Von Steinwehr, Carl Schurz, Leopold Von Gilsa, and Alexander Schimmelfennig. Most were chosen because they spoke German rather than any military ability and the XI Corps collapsed and ran at the consecutive battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.

They were not highly regarded by either side although the Rebs were usually glad to see them.
