That's exactly the order the team went with. They started with the assumption it was bad data but it checked out. Next, they formulated their naturalistic theories. They started looking at artificial explanations because they do fit and because all the naturalistic theories so far are so improbable.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I'm pretty bloody sure that the structure is God's palace!
The guys got plenty of moola you know.
He charged the parent company for 30 days labour to build this universe but rushed it through in 6.

He's also being charging maintenance ever since...
His invoice says: answering prayers daily, putting faces on toast to give people hope, etc

I think this God character is a bit of a dodgy bastard just quietly...

I, for one, welcome our new alien overlords !!

I'll offer them fresh human baby sashimi upon their arrival, maybe sate some of their other more base desires too.

Traveling 1500 lightyears builds appetites, and hunger and horny are going to be universal cravings.
