The Lost finale sucked. If you haven’t seen it yet and plan to, don’t open the hide tag below. Although, you may want to go ahead and read what’s in there instead of bothering to watch it. Your choice.
For five seasons we were presented with a large number of intriguing and mysterious questions about the island and… “what the hell is going on here?” in general. It was fun.
Then came season 6, the final season, which promised answers and a satisfying end to the story. Yay!! So season 6 starts off pretty good. A few of the characters, who were back in time, had prevented the hatch from ever being created, which meant that their plane would never crash on the island. This act apparently created an alternate timeline in which the plane did not crash, but landed safely in L.A.
Wait! Something is different in this timeline. Jack shouldn’t have a kid! Sawyer shouldn’t be a cop! Etc. and etc.
Cool. Where the hell is this going?
Back on the island, we find out more about Jacob and his brother the Smoke Monster, but it really only creates even larger questions. The more we know, the more we want to know “WHY?!” and “HOW?!”
So the final episode finally comes to a close. On the island, Jacob gives the job of protector to Jack. Jack fails and Smoke Monster/Locke succeeds in convincing Desmond to turn off the light by pulling a stone plug from the bottom of a pond. The light goes out, but now it seems that Locke Monster and Jack are no longer immortal. They fight and Jack kills Smokey in Locke’s form, but takes a mortal wound himself.
Jack heads back to the cavern to try to turn the light back on, but before doing so (because he knows he will die) he gives the Protector job to Hugo. Jack puts the plug back in, passes out, and then wakes up on the edge of a river… and then dies.
In the alternate timeline, all of the characters finally come face to face and remember their time on the island that apparently never happened. They all congregate at a church where they realize (we are told by Jack’s dead father) that this is a place they made together - a place where they all go when they die… and now that they are all here (with the glaring exception of Walt and his father)… they can finally go into the light. The church doors open and holy light shines in.
The end.
What. The. Fuck!?
Why could the island ‘time hop’?
Why did it seem to be sitting atop the largest source of electromagnetic force known to man?
What was that wheel that made the island ‘disappear’?
What was that light with the stone plug thing all about?
Why was Jacob’s brother turned into a smoke monster?
Why were Desmond and Jack not turned into smoke monsters?
What the hell did those numbers ever have to do with anything?
Why were Jacob, his brother, and Richard… apparently immortal.
The lighthouse? What the hell was that?
Why is there a giant statue that only has three toes on it’s feet like a cartoon character?
Where did Jacob’s “Mom” come from?
Who were the others?
Where did they come from?
How did Jacob get off the island somewhere in each character’s past to choose them with a touch?
What the hell was going on this whole time?
I guess we’ll never know. It turns out they were making it up as they went along and never had any intention of answering any of the questions. The wheel thing has nothing to do with the light in the cavern, because each was made up for a plot twist, used as one, then dismissed. The entire 6th season was a distraction. They created the alternate timeline so they could answer those questions without answering any of the questions from the previous five seasons.
I feel like I’ve been scammed.
