I was raised in a secular household but got involved with a youth ministry affiliated with a Baptist (ABC) church.  After a few years, I became uncomfortable enough with the open bigotry of some of the leadership that I stopped attending and continued study on an individual, non-denominational basis.  I attended non-denominational services for much of the time I was in the military but did not continue past my mid-20s.

P.S. Dad was raised in a Catholic household, Mom in a Mormon one. It didn't take for either of them, either (or for either of my siblings). I suppose our family has a low tolerance for bullshit.

I was raised RC and their mistake was to give me a bible at first communion. From there I explored other ideas, as christians are all much the same, except for some quirks, Islam is another variation, jews don't give a fuck, hindus are batshit and buddhists can just be left alone doing whatever they do to reach nirvana. From there, I tried a deistic/pantheistic perspective that are easily cut out by Occam's Razor. Yeah, atheist.

From my many sightings and gentle touch of the twin goddesses and their many forms, I then left the foolish ways of atheism. They can't even prove they are atheists! Big Grin

Northern baptist here. I was baptized at 14, and became atheist at 22. We do baptism through immersion so I wasnt forced into it, I got baptized because I felt the holy spirit was moving me to do so.

I'd be interested to know the theory behind your hypothesis.  But, before you throw away the evangelical part of the hypothesis, consider this:   evangelical is not a denomination and many denominations are evangelical.  The Southern Baptists are evangelical.  Many mainline protestant detonations have a evangelical wings such as the Missouri Synod Lutherans, the ECO Presbyterians, The Southern Methodist Church, and on and on.  Add to that the term evangelical is pretty muddy and under broader definitions most protestants are evangelical. 

I grew up first Presbyterian and then ALCU Lutheran.  I would not have called my family churches evangelical, but under this definition they were:

"of or relating to a Christian sect or group that stresses the authority of the Bible, the importance of believing that Jesus Christ saved you personally from sin or hell, and the preaching of these beliefs to other people."  http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/evangelical

But the ALCU Lutherans would not under this definition:

"emphasizing salvation by faith in the atoning death of Jesus Christ through personal conversion, the authority of Scripture, and the importance of preaching as contrasted with ritual"  http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/evangelical [emphasis added] The Lutherans do like their liturgy, just not as much as the Catholics like their mass.

It's all a matter of degree, and it gets grey pretty fast.
