Incorrect.

For the second part of your reply , what on earth does "garnering the favours" mean? We seem to be further away, not closer to an explanation.

Imagine God is Mike Tyson. Lets say Mike Tyson is going through one of his delusional episodes and he has "blessed" me. That means everytime someone irritates me Mike Tyson punches their face into a mushy pulp then bites their ear off. He also promises not to push my mother down the stairs or inflict any other nasty surprises on me. I'm his homeboy, his dawg, I'm down with him like a motherfuckin' g just as long as I keep praising him, bigging him up and standing behind him in a nike hoody saying "Yeah!" when hes threatening someone who hasn't shown him the proper respect.

The principle is essentially the same.

Hmmmm . . . . maybe that explains WW2. Hitler, as a lifelong catholic must have received a "blessing" many times. So the blitzkrieg may have been God in Mike Tyson mode. Everything is becoming clearer . . . . .
Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful. — Edward Gibbon

What does "blessed" actually mean. I have searched christian and theology websites and have not found an explanation that does not involve circular reasoning. i.e "Blessed are X means that X is filled with Gods' blessing"

Anyone help me out here? The issue is that this sermon is supposed to be the longest teaching of jesus and contain his greatest wisdoms, but I cannot get past the first line.

Regards.

Blessed= Rewarded by God, to be made happy

"Blessed" from the Koine greek
G3107
μακάριος makários, mak-ar'-ee-os; a prolonged form of the poetical μάκαρ mákar (meaning the same); supremely blest; by extension, fortunate, well off:—blessed, happy(X -ier).

I'm not sure I understand. Are you seriously claiming that the ultimate authority on how to understand the meaning of a word in the New Testament is an English translation? Do you actually think that the KJV is normative for all Xian Bible translation? I find it hard to believe that's the case, because it's so obviously false. In fact, I'm at a loss to explain what this post is about.

As Drich explains fully and correctly, "makarios" does indeed basically mean “happy” in Greek. A beatitude is introduced in Hebrew by “asre” (happiness). It forms an ancient sayings genre common to Egypt, Greece and Israel. We know a lot about it, and hopefully this knowledge will help answer the OP.

For those interested in a little more depth (cue stampede away) what Jesus is doing here may follow the form of beatitudes, but has a serious challenge to it.

In order to be the true Israel, the listeners must follow Jesus' agenda. For example, the military conquest of the land of Israel is no longer the way ahead; instead it is through meekness that success is achieved, but the prize is the whole earth, not just a bit of land on the east of the Mediterranean.
