Sometimes Trolls are awesome...
|
If the dumb guy was on my fl, I would troll him, too. I troll both my conservative and liberal friends, if they say anything that's ignorant or bigoted. They keep coming back for more, though, so I added all the repeat offenders to a BDSM group. When I get the chance, I'll start a thread with some of my epic trolls. It's not very mature but "Idle hands" and all that.
I wouldn't really call it bullying on either side to be honest. Just being an asshole on one end and going overboard with mockery on the other. Just as Rob can block Brendan, Brendan can easily block or unfriend Rob.
When someone starts being obnoxious and over the top mean to me here, I "troll" them by pretending to flirt. I've done this with EP a couple of times and it seems to work pretty well.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Lol I don't think Brendan would be down for that considering his earlier comments....
I ship it though ಠ_ಠ
I didn't even realize I was trolling people, until an self-identifying troll came to a page I admin and told me that my trolling was top notch. He then asked if I would like to join a secret group of trolls, who essentially targeted assholes on the internet.
I agree that internet shaming can go too far. (Justine Sacco comes to mind)
But when you use casual language, make fun of what the person said and not the person, don't cause any damage in their actual life, and don't incite others, I think the only outcome is that you might raise the other person's consciousness and maybe they become more careful/thoughtful about what they post.

But my issue was that most of Rob's stuff was aimed at completely neutral things Branden was saying, and was just making fun of his spelling or w/e. I just don't see a purpose to that other than to make the other person feel stupid.

I think sometimes making someone feel stupid can be good.
I think it's worth mentioning again that Facebook is not some private journal where someone is intruding on your personal thoughts. When I post something on Facebook, my sole intent is to have other people see it and respond. If somebody on my feed posted inane stuff like that all the time (he's pretty prolific, Brendan's first post was just before Thanksgiving) I would respond in just the same way.

Sometimes it can be good. Sometimes it's just mean and over the top, imho.
