I don't think a coup will come to pass in our lifetimes. No country, America included, is immune to the tide of history, but the principle of civilian control of the military is more deeply ingrained that you seem to think.

I saw Pence on TV a couple of days ago, and I must say I was impressed: I had no idea a man could speak so long and enunciate so well, simultaneously praising Trump to the sky and gargling his balls. Seriously, I was impressed. If Pence's VP hopes are dashed, I'm sure he can make coin as an older rent boy.

Pence, or someone like him, was inevitable. I suspect Trump finds Christie or Gingrich more suitable, in terms of shared personality traits, but neither could deliver the conservative Christians Trump has to have to have any chance of being competitive in November.
