Why I don't like expensive things....
March 12, 2016 at 2:31 pm
Why, well lets say you go to the eye doctor, and you pay 3 to 500 dollars for a pair of glasses. Why do I buy mine at the dollar store? Because today I forgot I had them in my hands when I dropped the laundry in the washing machine.
It is also why when people buy me stuff for my birthday or Christmas I tell them to keep it cheap. The thought is more important to me than the cost. The most expensive thing I own is my computer and even that is low end. I actually value the rubber duckies my mom has bought for me as a inside joke more than anything.

Got to say Red Wind I'm with you in the AAA game racket.
All too often I've been burned by AAA games buying near release (never ever preorder kids, it's a rip) only to be thoroughly disappointed by the total lack of gameplay or buggy/disappointing mechanics.
Sandbox open world RPGs are my favorite genre so I tend to go for those too. Recently I've been playing through all the old Final Fantasys which has taken me a good 9months (currently on 7) of on and off play.

I'm much more attracted to a smoking deal on some bauble than the 'prestige' of paying thru the nose for something.
And is it really a 'luxury' if I put in some time on an Ebay auction and the mailman delivers it a week later ??
It's not the same gestalt as going to Water Tower Place (that's still upscale ain't it?) and getting hosed.

I tend to be very careful with money.
I like nice shit as much as the next person, but I don't have to have anything.
My ex-husband used to spend $ like goddamn Paris Hilton. It drove me up a fucking wall.

When it comes to my eyes, I prefer contacts to glasses. Contacts are more expensive, though I sometimes don't wear them. I'd like to get Lasik done, but I'm also a little worried that something would go wrong. There's always risks with that sort of thing. I'd have to wait until summer to get it done.
As for other things... I spend a lot on things like shoes, and clothes. But for most everything else we try to wait until it's on sale. We did recently buy our first New Car. Mostly because we got a big tax refund, and now my husband started his new job. We'll splurge on some things though.

I have learned (over the decades) that in some cases it is important to spend the money for higher-end equipment. Sturdy cooking pots - the higher end furnace that saves a LOT of money on the heating bills, etc. For myself, though - I often look for clothes at Goodwill. It's a balancing act.

I never spend much on clothes but especially not for my kid. I swear after 1 day her pants look like she's been dragging her arse on the ground like a dog with an itchy bum.
She only started school this year and she's already lost two hats and a pair of shoes.
But I will spend money on good meat.
Nothing like a bit of grain-fed rib fillet, premium mince or local prawns( none of that shit from Vietnamese farms).
Fish has to be Sweetlip, Red Emperor or Barramundi( none of that Kiwi Hoki shit).
Veges and fruit I don't care, I can cut out the black bits.
I also like to spend a bit more on car tyres.

A few years ago (before they closed) I went to Venice Inn, where Michael Simon had given a big thumbs up on their steak.
He wasn't kidding.
I've only had one steak in my life that cost over $50, and damn, it was worth it. Yummy clear to the last bite.
And since they closed (kids didn't want to take over family business) and the building has been bulldozed, I'm not likely to have another.
