'Retard' is a slur these days, that's why it's not used. If there comes a time when 'intellectually disabled' is considered insulting, then some other term will be used in its place.
Hopefully, by the grace of the Aesir, civilisation will survive this most gruelling of trials.

It is interesting, however, how derogatory words are always incorporated by the injured party for whom they were intentionally meant to harm.

Black guys call one another the "N" word.

Gay guys call one another the "Q" word.

I am fairly certain I even saw some comedy movies where mentally disabled individuals referred to others with the "R" word.

If derogatory terms have become so comedic as to show the absurdity of their usage, then why are we still becoming upset by their usage?

If I am experiencing a particularly troublesome time in my life, I am not thinking of others.  Rather, I am thinking of how I can better my life and really stepping hard on everyone in my way.

Correction: That's your life. Nothing would worsen my life satisfaction faster than 'stepping on anyone my way' and I getting what I want out of life and being a prick are two wholly incompatible ideas for me.

I have found that the usage of derogatory terms come from a place of personal struggle at the time. The frustration in one's life leads more toward expressing what one later realizes should have been restrained.

However, we are only human.

The perfect example is parenthood. Parents often become frustrated with their children and eventually state something out of frustration. It is the same with teenagers, their hormones running their thoughts, saying things to their parents out of frustration.

Humanity is not perfect. We can claim that we are all perfect and have never said anything mean, but the fact of life is that we do state mean things in order to compensate for how we are being overwhelmed.

Regardless of the wisdom of the aphorism "The unexamined life isn't worth living" if you're really never going to engage someone who is dishonest and manipulative just to win I suggest you never waste your time with introspective 'self-engagement' in that case because your little pickled onion self is the epitome of that. I wouldn't expect an intellectually disabled pickled onion that erroneously believes itself to be a penguin to even be cognizant of its own intellectually disabled douchenozzleness though... So....
