circumstances of the 'incident' are substantially in line with the first version I heard. I found the report of what happened, and age of the kid is the big discrepancy, 12 years, not 12 months.

The big reveal is the killer was drunk, multiple offense drunk with no license. THAT is the criminal part I didn't know. And a physical assault. And my recollection of the news reports at the time (not knowing who all was involved) are substantially correct.
