2001 was just a bit too slow for me. Add that with it having that 60's acting and style, and I just couldn't get into it. I respect it for the classic that it is, but it's not really for me.

Nope, no Avatar. I mean the visuals of that film were good, but...

Avatar succeeded by its excessive advertising; so many people went to see it not because of the quality of the film, but because it had been plastered everywhere and artificially hyped months before release.

They sure are among the top ten if cultural impact has any weight.

I wouldn't count the Star Wars movies as science fiction. They're space opera - fantasy in space.

Ok - considering different subgenres
favorite space operas
1. Fifth Element
2. Star Wars
3. Empire
4. Stargate
Favorite space horror
1. Alien
2. Aliens
3. Pitch Black
4. Apollo 18
Alien plays in a different league from any of the other ones, though. The best space based film there is in my opinion.

I'm sure some of you weren't, but the massive success of the movie was still built on inflation. Many saw it because advertising had dedicated so much time, money and internet space into forcefully making it the movie everyone was supposed to go see. It wasn't word of mouth about the quality of the film that filled seats, it was well-funded, persistent drilling of the movie into the public's collective consciousness.
