My digging into paleontology as a lad was a precursor to my abandonment of faith. Learning at six that the Earth was billions of years old -- even though I couldn't comprehend that vast sweep of time -- made me wonder about the "days" in Genesis, forcing this Southern Baptist to entertain the possibility of an allegorical reading.
