Speechless

RE: Speechless
I apologise. That was a bit harsh and unnecessary.

I seriously have no idea what you're talking about, and I should have left it at that. Why on Earth you're comparing religion to evolution, I have no clue.

Of course religion, as a concept, doesn't harm anyone directly. I was referring to the harm that goes on in the way some people choose to apply religion.

That  was more a minor point in the statement, but really I could say the same... I have no idea what you mean that religion causes harm (at least implicitly).

What!?

I don't know how to reply to this. I'm not even going to try. You're showing such a lack of comprehension of just about all the terms you're using, despite having gone over it hundreds of times, that it really is pointless.

That makes two of us.... I suppose you would need to articulate what you mean by harm in order to compare the two. But as I said, that wasn't really what I was agreeing with.

You must have a soft fluffy view of natural selection.... how nice.  It may be time for some education and rational thought!

Natural selection, good or bad is based on empirical evidence ... it may be superseded by a better understanding of the facts along with further empirical evidence, but it is a scientific process that may eventually lead to the truth rather than what some would prefer to be the truth.

Religion, bad or worse is based on indoctrination from stone-age myths and reinterprets our better understanding of facts and new empirical evidence so some can maintain what they prefer to be the truth and tries to stop us reaching the truth.

According to current science we are mere sparks of consciousness. Whats the point of empirical wisdom when we are fragile dying meatbags.

Okay, you want some examples of people causing harm through religion:

1) Indoctrinating young minds before the age of reason, especially with such vile concepts as "hell".

2) Bigotry and social exclusion due to dogma.

3) General divisiveness, up to and including wars over religious differences.

4) Favourable treatment for religious institutions.

5) Atheists being ostracised or even killed in some countries just for being atheists.

6) Dogmatic mindsets and stories which cause barriers to learning.

7) Trying to get theology taught in science classes.

That's enough for now I think.

RE: Speechless
I'm not against people being religious. I think it's silly, but it's their decision. I am against people doing harm under the guise of religion, as I've detailed above.

Of course, not everyone will agree with me about what exactly is and isn't harmful. I wouldn't expect them to. But I would be rather surprised if anyone dismissed my entire list. I doubt I could have much of a discussion about morality with such a person, except to say that their value system is very different to mine.

Atheism isnt perfect either. Atheists always can say "YOLO... Why not" and add any crazy shit.

You might say wtb allah akbar. Jihadis are different story. They have OT style quaran and they can do whatever they wish to non believers. And thats savage, thats for sure.

You're just trolling us, right? You can't seriously be saying this stuff.

Atheists can say things? That's your attempt at a tu quoque?

...then that wouldn't be "atheism." That would be an atheist who also happens to believe something else. Atheism isn't some belief system or ideology, it's literally one response to one question. You've been a member here longer than I have, I'm surprised you haven't absorbed that by now.

He's one of those people who thinks he's better than both theists and atheists. I don't know how he thinks he escapes being in one of those categories himself. Probably by not understanding what the words mean.
