Coup d'État in Turkey under way?

Saw reports coming in on German late news. They had pictures from most of the major cities. Seems as if at least a major proportion is behind this, going by the tanks patrolling the streets. A few protestors in religious outfits, according to the news. Otherwise folks seem to stay at home and wait it out.

On a personal note, I hope that pompous ass is safely behind bars by tomorrow. Last time I felt that way was when the soviet military switched sides in 1991.

You're old enough to remember that the turkish military always stepped in when the constitution was threatened. They're big boys and never waited for your OK.

Never formally express approval for a coup until you know it has actually succeeded. This rule is so elementary no one except the bush administration have yet been known to be unaware of it.

So much confusion so far. People claiming it's the entire military, while a leading army commander says he does not support the coup, and calls it an action of a small military group.

Last reports on our news. Fighting between police and the military. Civilians on both sides of the spectrum, some cheering the soldiers on, some protesting.

Military commanders seem to be giving televised orders to soldiers to go home. Doesn't look like this coup attempt has much in the way of support.
