Nice!  I currently live in a town of 3000 and might be moving to a town of 541.

The town is scattered to Hell and gone, covers a large area that is mostly rural.

I've got five neighbors. Nearest gas station is five miles away, nearest supermarket sixteen.

I'll never live in a city again unless I absolutely have to.

I don't know about Texas, but here in the mid-west, Michigan in particular, the hicks are all over the place. DO NOT MISTAKE REDNECK FOR A RURAL PERSON OR A SOUTHERNER. There is a difference. All I know is here in rural Michigan, you can't talk to 3 people without someone being incredibly racist and homophobic. Just a couple of years ago a gay guy in a bar got beat the shit out of so bad that the people next to him got blood splattered on them. THAT IS NORMAL REDNECK BEHAVIOR. Don't tell me not to hate these people. I have a very good reason to.

I guess you're using "redneck" in a different way, then? A redneck, to me, is a Southerner who ain't afraid of a little hard work.

Some are racist, some aren't. Some are educated, some aren't. Most are parochial, and very few are cosmopolitan -- Mooney and I are the exceptions, and not the rule, there. Believe it or not, even homophobic racists read stuff, too.

I'd never call a Michigander a redneck.I reckon the species only extends as far north as a line drawn from northern Kentucky to the bootheel of Missouri. Of course, I'm no expert. I'm just a redneck.

Naw, that's mesquite. Great wood for smoking meat, every so often I'll go and lop off a branch. Soak it in water for a couple of hours, deck the coal-pan in my grill, and get to work. Best for beef and chicken -- though the latter is better smoked over pecan wood. Mesquite burns hot, you'll have to dash water on it or else you'll be doing some real cooking.

I'm using the word redneck, hick, whatever to describe white trash. Maybe that's where the confusion on this post is coming from.

Ok, maybe rednecks are more southern, where as hicks are more of a mid-western thing. The terms are fairly inter-changeable though.

It is. I wish the power lines were underground ... but this ain't the city, we don't have that kind of money.

I love living here. Wildlife all around, quiet nights, and if I want to deal with people I go to see them -- they ain't around unless I want them.

Similar leaves but I should have known! We have those all over the dry side of the Big Island. Brought in for cattle feed and the destruction of chainsaws!

I had to climb and trim a thorned one the other day, spent 3 hours up there... it was a slow dance in leather welding sleeves.

I don't always have serious business...but when I do, I wear a suit.
