Whoever it was came up with the concept of the sofa. Gotta love a good sofa.

Like I said on Facebook... I love a good pull-out.
Also, Bill Boeing.

Norman Borlaug is up there for me.

I will also plump for Newton, especially with me being a maths type guy.

The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
Napoleon Bonaparte
I wouldn't know.
Maybe some artists, such as Mozart, who, according to his letters also seems to have been a pretty cool guy. And let's not forget that he composed such immortal works as "kiss my ass, quickly, quickly". Partial sympathy for some aspects of hstorical figures. Such as Napoleon, who, apart from his wars, also commissioned a civil law codex that has been so modern that it's still in use in many countries. Or at least has been built on. He also did away with the guilds, who prevented craftsmen from opening their own business unless they were members. The ones fighting fascism in the 30ies and 40ies. Too many to mention but too few to make a difference.
Not sure who brought up the idea of it being someone you'd like to have dinner with. But by that criteria I'd want someone witty. Mark Twain might be over the top and perhaps a better story teller than a conversationalist. Plus the smoking would rule him out anyway.
Based on the historical novels by Graves and the BBC adaption, Tibber's nephew Claudius might be a fun choice were it not for the evident spitting accompanying the stuttering. Otherwise, that would definitely be my call. If I spoke any Chinese it might be interesting to have Lao Tsu. But maybe he'd just sit there, smile and chuckle to himself in a self-contained, contented sort of way so I'm scratching him off the list. Got it. Give me Gerry Durrell. He was a naturalist and funny as hell. I've snorted food laughing while reading his books and he knew a lot about animals, an interest I share with him. |
