That is a great example of out of context.... because it is in no way commanding slavery.  Actually; on second thought context is not necessary.... it just doesn't say what you say it does.

That is a great example of the exact excuse the OP was talking about. Thank you for demonstrating. Bravo!
I don't believe you. Get over it.

When the context is reality, the entire book looks like horseshit to me.

I'm surprised that an allegedly perfect being is incapable of fashioning a clearer communication that isn't reliant upon context for its meaning.

Yeah so let's expand it to see the whole passage.........  (amazing what you can do on the web, isn't it?)

Quote:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

A true religion for slaves.  Do what you're told, STFU, obey, obey, obey.  What slave owner would not endorse such a "religion?"

Meanwhile, the upper classes stole everything that wasn't nailed down!

It also seems like this mysterious 'context' thing is precisely what has given us over 70,000 Christian schisms.

Maybe our defenders of the faith here might want to rethink this 'context' thing and maybe let it drop here.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

And when's the last time a christer church showed a female pew warmer on the rag the door ??

What does that have to do with Christianity?

I see.... are you against context and/or correctly presenting the content accurately?

Yep... still not commanding slavery... but I find your additions interesting as well.

Are you trying to lure me into exactly what the OP is warning people against? Please do try to prove his point even more, though.
I don't believe you. Get over it.

Ask them to show how the proper context justifies making slaves of the people of the nation's around you. If that doesn't shut them up, nothing will.

Because Jesus said one of the reasons he came was to fulfill Mosaic law.  Matthew 5:17-20.
