Short answer: It doesn't go through the flute; it goes across the hole in the mouthpiece, much the same way as you get a tone when you blow across the top of a bottle. Ideally you want to keep your lips very close together and send a hard, thin, fast stream of air across the hole. You may have to play a bit with the angle to get a nice tone. The second octave is actually easier to play than the very low notes, by the way.

Flute also doesn't have the same high back pressure that a trumpet has, so there's a lot of wasted air. At least at first you may have to take more frequent breaths, perhaps being able to play for 2 bars when everyone else can play for 4 before taking a breath.
