I would extend the question. When did it go out of fashion entirely?
Just take the subway in the morning and count the times someone bumps into you or tries to run you over because you just don't matter on their way. Count the times someone actually holds the door when you're right behind them and don't let it slam into your face.
People in general don't care anymore. I never was big on manners but there are some things bothering me to no end. The small signs of people caring for each other or even taking note of someone else existing and not just being an obstacle in their way.
That certainly was different some 20 years ago.
Maybe you need to move. None of these happened to me today, last week, last month, .......... Of course, I don't take the subway so there is that. But no one cut me off in traffic, the cashiers all said hello, please and thank you, doors were held by me or others. I might need to appreciate hickville more.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

People hold open doors, and say excuse me if they bump into me, all the time. People let other people in line when waiting to exit a parking lot, or change lanes.
I think it may be a locale thing. Despite what is spewed, it isn't a millenial thing, plenty of young and polite people around here as well.
I would say it also varies in politics. One rotten apple can infect the whole barrel. Some politicians are just more polite than others. Obama is a truly gracious man who has set a very high standard. Bush Sr and Reagan, , even though I voted for neither, were both gentlemen.
If this race was Bernie vs Romney, for instance, I expect it wouldn't be the circus we are seeing now.

For real.
No I don't think so. They were discussing her book not playing shake or not shake games. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/jan-brewer-g...a-in-ariz/
Rick Perry declined to meet Obama at the plane suggesting a longer private meeting instead.
"I appreciate the offer to greet you at Austin-Bergstrom Airport, but a quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crises enveloping the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas,” Perry wrote, as quoted by the Wall Street Journal. “I would instead offer to meet with you at any time during your visit to Texas for a substantive meeting to discuss this critical issue.” http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ri...ac-meeting

Yes, because we all know that it was Karl Rove using Jedi mind tricks that forced Bill to use Monica's twat as a humidor.
Vast right wing conspiracy = scapegoat for lack of judgement combined with zero integrity garnished with the expectations that one cannot be held accountable in a court of law or public opinion.

The history of presidential campaigns is not exactly a moment of shining glory for the US.

Quote:As the mud flew back and forth, the campaign got so nasty that Adams completely withdrew from any active participation, feeling that he was above such campaign filth. One Adams newspaper even wrote, "General Jackson's mother was a common prostitute, brought to this country by the British soldiers! She afterward married a mulatto man, with whom she had several children, of which number General Jackson is one!"
Imagine what they could have done with TV, the internet, and social media.
