Late last night I saw one of the most harrowing movies I've seen for many years.
"The City Of Life And Death" released in 2009, made in black and white. A Chinese movie set during the rape of Nanjing (1937) by the Japanese. This is an event many Japanese still deny happened. Not sure if it has been officially recognised by Japan.
The film also features an odd person, John Rabe, known as 'The Good Nazi' and 'The Good Man Of Nanjing' who saved the lives of thousands of Chinese.
Recommended.

Quote:City of Life and Death (Chinese: 南京! 南京!; pinyin: Nánjīng! Nánjīng!) is a 2009 Chinese film directed by Lu Chuan, marking his third feature film. The film deals with the Battle of Nanjing and its aftermath (commonly referred to as "The Rape of Nanking" or the "Nanking Massacre") during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The film is also known as Nanking! Nanking! or Nanjing! Nanjing!.
While originally slated for a 2008 release, the director-general of the Chinese Film Bureau announced in September that the film would be delayed to an early 2009 release.[1] The film was eventually released on April 22, 2009 where it became a box-office success, earning RMB150m (approximately 20 million dollars) in its first two and a half weeks alone.[2]

Quote:The Good Man of Nanking: The Diaries of John Rabe is a collection of the personal journals of John Rabe, a German businessman who lived in Nanjing at the time of the Nanking Massacre in 1937–1938. The book contains the diaries that Rabe kept during the Nanking Massacre, writing from his personal experience and observation of the events that took place. Rabe's diaries were made known and quoted by author Iris Chang during the research for her book, The Rape of Nanking;[1] they were subsequently translated from German to English by John E. Wood and published in the United States in 1998.
