ASPCA commercials
#11
RE: ASPCA commercials
I hate the idea of euthanizing an animal. Both of my current kitties are also rescue animals. As a matter of fact, all of the cats or dogs I've ever ad have been rescues.

That being said, ASPCA sometimes rescues animals that are extremely disabled from mistreatment (or mentally ill from the same), and can never be adopted. The cost of keeping every single rescue animal alive may not be feasible if they wish to keep feeding and caring for new animals that are always coming in. It's a true crying shame (like, actually real crying about it), but sometimes there isn't a better choice.

People need to fix their animals, keep cats indoors, and be responsible owners. There need to be harsher punishments for animal cruelty. I'm not holding their difficult decision to euthanize some animals against the ASPCA.

If they're uncurable Euthanasia is certainly the kindest option. But euthanising perfectly healthy animals or having cureable diseases doesn't get my approval.

We had a lot of shelter dogs. One from a research facility where they did fuck knows what to that poor girl. She certainly was mentally ill in the sense that she didn't let anyone close in the first few weeks. But that went away with time. She also was totally deaf and had diabetes, which we didn't know when taking her in. But it wouldn't have influenced our decision anyway. We gave her another six years, perfectly happy years as it seems, judging by her behavior.

Fun fact: whenever I see one of those commercials, my brain reads "ASPCA" as Ass-Pack-Ah.

Go, brain, go.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

RE: ASPCA commercials
Shelters here in Phoenix are up to their eyeballs in pitbulls and chihuahuas.  Worse, the overcrowding is so bad that there is a persistent epidemic of Upper Respiratory Infections that they cannot get a handle on because they can't separate the dogs enough.  I actually had an argument with one of my volunteers because she thought that we should bring strays to the shelter because that is where people would go to look for a missing dog.  She's probably right but I'll be damned if I'm going to take a healthy dog and put it into those conditions so that when we get it back 3 -6 days later we have to pump it full of antibiotics because of an infection that it picked up in the shelter.

I do sympathize with the county shelter workers.  I don't know what else they are supposed to do.
