People keep making the argument that Trump supporters would have done the same thing and that those that don't have this view are incredulous. This is of course a counterfactual which can never be proven. I think those making these claims would at least make a couple observations:

1. If racist bigots were ever going to protest and march in opposition to an election result it would have been after Obama's first election. It didn't happen. This does not mean that there weren't racists and bigots that weren't equally upset, just that large public displays of dissatisfaction isn't part of their MO. Instead, I recall there were stories where they made a run on ammo.

2. During the campaigns, it was Democrat supporters that physically showed up at Republican events to disrupt proceedings as a means of protest. Republican supporters did not.

I don't want my contribution here to be misconstrued. I am by no means arguing that had Clinton won that there wouldn't be Trump supporters calling for Clinton's head and have their complaint siren turned up to 11; I just don't ascribe to the notion that they would have taken to the streets in protest as we are seeing from disaffected Clinton supporters. I also don't think Trump supporters would burn flags as a means of protest, although I couldn't count out some cross burning in smaller invitation only gatherings outside of town.
No, they Racist Bigots are holding a celebratory march because Trump won, instead.
KKK celebration march, the real one, not a hoax

The thing about this is, the coal mining industry is going to end sooner or later, because either we're going to run out of coal, or people are finally going to become aware of just how much damage to the environment it does. Industries rise and fall; we don't have a chariot building industry anymore, the newspaper industry is collapsing at the moment, but I don't see politicians trying to do anything about that. There's a reason for that: the newspaper industry has been replaced by a better industry, online news. Coal mining is being replaced by better industries too, like solar, wind, nuclear, etc.

Clinton's comment about putting miners out of work, in context, is actually a positive thing:

Quote:So for example, I'm the only candidate which has a policy about how to bring economic opportunity using clean renewable energy as the key into coal country. Because we're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business, right?

And we're going to make it clear that we don't want to forget those people. Those people labored in those mines for generations, losing their health, often losing their lives to turn on our lights and power our factories.

Now we've got to move away from coal and all the other fossil fuels, but I don't want to move away from the people who did the best they could to produce the energy that we relied on.

Bolded the important part. Industries end, whether naturally or as a result of social / economic change. The important bit that politicians can do is ensure that those people in the industry left without jobs are supported.

Quote:For some to paint Trump supporters as only being racists, xenophobes, sexist nazis is narrow minded and naive.

I don't think anyone is painting them as "only" being racists, xenophobes, and sexist. The problem is they supported a candidate who has said things both openly and privately that are racist, xenophobic, and sexist. If you choose to support an asshole because you think he'll make your life better, that's absolutely fine, but you are still supporting an asshole, and no amount of reasoning is going to negate that.

I don't think the coal industry's done just yet with the election of Trump, hopefully. Other forms of energy sources, wind, solar, nuclear don't seem to be taking off very well. I'm sure that the technology for clean coal has much improved over the years.

Supporting an asshole is subjective. I guess I can be subjective and say that I didn't support the other asshole.

No, not everyone that disagrees with me is a Nazi. You're a Nazi, though.  Wink

My side?  You must have mistaken me for a Clinton supporter.

Nope. You're assuming. I would not have thrown a tantrum if Hillary had won. I wouldn't like it, but I wouldn't be joining mobs of violent protesters burning our cities down.

I'm Nazi, You're Commie. Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too....drink Dr. Pepper. Smile

You're definitely not a Trump supporter.

Guys, he is right, I doubt the Trump supporters would have protested too much.  They would have been told, again, that their ideas are outdated and unacceptable, so they duck their heads and go back to being bigots in their private little echo chambers.

But that isn't what happened.  The REASON people are protesting (and you have no idea, most of these protests are in very blue areas, so it's possible they were very active in voting and GOTV movements), is because they, their friends, their families and neighbors are about to lose freedoms.  A lot of protesters are of hispanic descent, many are gay.
All of their protests are against the intolerance this country just voted into office, not against the MAN, so much as the disgusting xenophobia, racism and sexism he represents.

I'm not saying go out a burn a car. That's terrible. But peaceful protests (which the vast majority have been, just like with Occupy Wallstreet), and go out with a sign that says love trumps hate, that is a message that they will not tolerate the insane shit we are already starting to see, like little 5th graders chanting build a wall while their Hispanic classmates CRY!

And if YOU think it's ok, and people shouldn't protest that kind of behavior, then fuck you.

(November 11, 2016 at 12:06 pm)Tiberius Wrote: I just love how now the tables have turned, the Trumpettes are the ones saying that all the rioting and violence is crazy. You can't have it both ways. Your candidate, before the election, encouraged violence at his own rallies, encouraged his own supporters to beat up his opponent's supporters, and said repeatedly that the election was rigged.

You guys set the tone for this. If Trump had lost, there would still be violence, protests, etc, it would just be coming from Trump's supporters.

The worst Clinton did on the campaign was call half of Trump's supporters "deplorable". Yeah, that's bad, it might have cost her the election, but calling someone names is not as bad as actively encouraging violence.

I did not support Trump, just making sure I'm not being lumped into the Trumpette category.

Trump did set a tone and should be admonished for it, but this partially buttresses my previous point. This rhetoric was delivered specifically in the context of handling people disrupting his rallies. It's inconceivable to me that Clinton would have reacted the same way; however, Republicans en masse did not coordinate disruption of Clinton rallies in this manner.

That said, Trump did not make people racist and bigoted, but it's reasonable to conclude that his statements and the election results have emboldened those that already were. This is why his remarks were so irresponsible. On the other hand, Clinton herself cannot be similarly responsible for any protests that turn violent or destructive in that she emphasized a peaceful transition. The sad observation here is that apparently racist bigots require some sort of tacit approval from leadership to be openly hostile; whereas, Democrat supporters apparently do not.

I don't know how relevant to the topic this is, but I admire the man for his boldness if nothing else.  Too bad he's a cretin and couldn't have put it to better use.

Like it or not figures like him are needed in authority. People who aren't afraid of or pander to their own voters. Trump couldn't have believed he was going to get away with this shit, it just so happened that he did. And good on him for fucking over the media. He is the wake up call America needed right now. I just sincerely hope he is just a cinic that did and said everything he could in order to win, but that he's not really as terrible a human being as he painted himself as on purpose.

Feel free to call me naive. But let's just say I think I know his type and I take solace in that.

Yeah, I think the Dems were more than a touch complacent, and it bit them in the ass.

Because that line was still discussing protests, and this is a celebration.

You think white supremacy is a small movement in the US?  I mean, it's not 50% of the people, but it's not >1% either.  The KKK is certainly not the sum total of them.

Well, the next few years will reveal that you've only seen the tip of the iceberg for many years, the mass of them have been quietly hiding under the water, waiting to rock the boat hard.  Combined with this nativism, nationalism and populism, I think we'll see a large upswing in their numbers and activities for quite a while, now.
