Again, thanks for all the informative responses. I know atheism isn't something we choose to be or give a shot, and the reason I've been having atheistic thoughts is mainly because I never questioned my faith too much, and now I'm losing confidence in it. Obviously my conscience is conflicted here, as I'm so used to firmly believing in my faith. I'm worried that I'd be sinning and doubting God too much...but at the same time, if God isn't real, then it doesn't matter at all.

Atheists, why do you reject the idea of God, and why should I? I know that your answers will include "there's no evidence" and all that, but please try to explain.

I reject the idea of God because, just like Santa Claus, elves, fairies, unicorns, leprechauns, etc, I see no evidence that they actually exist and plenty of evidence to suggest they are just folklore.  The bible is not a perfect book, and there are plenty of glaring errors and contradictions in it.  If you can't accept part of it as true, why accept any of it?

But frankly, I'm not going to tell anyone why they should reject a god they believe in.  If it works for you and you're not a dick about it to those who don't share your faith, then go for it.  I don't have a problem with it as long as the faithful keep it to themselves and out of our secular government.

It sounds like you're having doubts, and that's where I unintentionally started upon my path toward atheism.  I keep looking for answers, and the evidence led me away from omnipotent deities.

Any institution that frowns on asking questions and thinking things through is highly suspicious. What kind of God wouldn't want you to use your brain?

I've just always done what I think is right, and the consequences from "God" have been absolutely nothing. If he's sitting around tutting and giving me black marks for not figuring out which religious book to follow and then just doing everything it says, then he can fill his boots. Any respectable God would approve of what I try to do with my life, I would hope.

You can't fade in believing in God, because faith is in the will. I suggest before you turn into one of those oxymorons, you think again.

You should become atheist because you have thoroughly examined the possibility of the existence of God with an open mind and come to the conclusion that there are no gods.  You should never "choose" to become an atheist.  It should be a conclusion you reach, not a choice you make.  If you examine the possibility with what you believe to be an open mind and do not come to the conclusion that there are no gods then you should not become an atheist.  There's no point to it then.

As for the worry that you would be sinning and doubting God too much to openly and honestly consider it, that should give you pause right there.  Why would God not want you to objectively consider his existence?  Why would he not even want you to think about it?  What would the purpose be of possibly damning you to Hell for all eternity just for considering the possibility that your beliefs may be wrong?  There is one single way that makes sense.  The establishment has instilled a fear of "thinking too much", not because God demands it, but because they don't want people thinking too much.  Does God want you to be stupid?  Does he want you to never think for yourself, to just do what some person SAYS that HE says to do?  Or is it more likely that the person telling you what God says to do is the one who doesn't want you thinking too much?
