Sounds specifically like a vegan issue.
The retort that they probably use leather belts/other animal based products is pretty shitty.
1) You aren't really arguing they are wrong, just that they must be hypocrites.
2) You have no idea if they are, in fact, hypocrites. You are just assuming they must be.
Most of the vegans I know go to extreme lengths to avoid animal based products. I can't say for sure if they avoid all animal based products, or if that is even possible in today's market, but I'll be damned if they don't spend an enormous amount of time researching it and trying to change their behavior when they can.
Assuming they don't avoid all animal based products and they know they don't, their commitment to an ideal, whether or not I share it, is pretty impressive.
