Nope. CD clearly believes that children should starve. He's a monster.

This is the lesson that I learned today.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Ok, so you're in your little shop and see someone buying food with a govt assistance card, but spending cash on smokes or booze. How can you possibly know how many of the people who come in are on government aid? The bloke who comes in to buy a newspaper or a stick of gum, the woman who pays cash for a carton of milk, the other woman who pays cash for cigarettes? ALL of these people - for all you know - may be receiving aid.

You're a bunghole, you really are.

When we have a minimum wage that's not a living wage, that means people need extra help to get by, so they don't have to spend all their waking hours at work just to feed themselves. Maybe part of the reason some people are unemployed is because other people are working three different jobs in a state that doesn't believe in birth control and sex education.

Yes that also means that people who have more should pay more to lift the rest up, because those people can afford it.

Why bust my ass at work 60+ hours a week when I could work part time and get Medicaid and foodstamps?

How much do you make working those 60 hours? Guaranteed its more than you'd make if you totaled up the part time salary and all the food stamp values. That's why people bust their asses.

Welfare is supposed to help you survive, not buy stuff that you want but don't need. You can't buy a good car, save for a house, or put money away for retirement on welfare.

Probably because your standard of living will be higher, would be my guess. Maybe because you have a lot of pride, too. Perhaps because you can't qualify for assistance?

Why don't you tell us about your motivations, rather than expecting us to divine them? I mean, I'm fresh out of chicken-guts.

True, but if things were ideal they'd work very differently at almost every level. One reason that government is a useful way to help the needy is the reach that they have and the ability to spread the support more evenly and target it at areas where charity may not be keeping up. They are also able to provide subsidies based on situational needs, in order to help those who need access to doctors and medicine for their children. I'd add that there is oversight and record-keeping to help eliminate fraud and waste, but we have probably heard of too many examples of both of those to trust that the funds are being used efficiently. Still, that's another of the things we'd have in an ideal world. Lacking that, attacking the problem with the tools of charity organizations and government programs will have to do.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
