Cherry-picking one phrase out of one sentence and trying to make it a stand-alone principle is inherently intellectually dishonest.  What Jefferson wrote was:

If the Earth exploded today, who would be missed the most tomorrow? I think it'd be a 7 billion way tie.

In the grand scheme, we're equal, but not in a good way. Practically, we're obviously not equal. For different practical purposes, sometimes we pretend we are.
