Obviously hate crimes are terrible, but what's the justification for tougher sentencing? If I do something horrible to someone because they are X, why is that worse legally than doing it to them just because I feel like it? I may be missing something obvious.

Of course nobody will defend the attackers.. I thought this was to start a discussion about hate-crime legislation.

I also think the term "hate crime" is pointless and redundant in all cases. Crime is crime, send these 4 people off for a very lengthy jail sentence, get the victim the treatment and counselling he's going to need and let's move on with the rest of our lives.
