You were taught wrong, firstly Hitler never won everbody over, in fact his popularity was beginning to nosedive when von Papen gave him the Chancellorship, and secondly plenty of people thought him evil from the word go.
The triumph of Hitler was to give him power over and above what he was due electorally, by duping them that only he could safeguard their position in German politics and society.
