Spam Detection (READ THIS IF YOUR POSTS KEEP DISAPPEARING)

Please be aware this will not be perfect and may result in two issues:

1) Spam getting through the filter and still being displayed (please report this as per usual)
2) Posts made by regular users being detected as spam, despite it not being spam.

If you make a thread / post and it doesn't display, the second issue may have happened to you. Do not panic, your post is not deleted, but it is automatically hidden. PM a staff member and we will check for you.

You forgot to mention that if your post gets caught in the spam.filter, you are a terrible person and need to atone for your wrongdoing.

no

it's true, all true

we have scads of terrible people here who desperately need to atone.

Some ablutions wouldn't hurt either . . . . .

Would sending money be a significant atonement?

'Spam detection' me arse. This is clearly a ploy to nefariously delete posts keeping the message of Jesus from the oppressed and the down trodden.

Well done.

How is it the forum software can track our posting and give us user titles based on that quantity, but cannot use the same information to determine if one is or isn't a spammer? That makes absolutely no sense.

Those are two entirely different problems. Post count has very little to do with spam detection, except that we exclude posters who have more than (mumble) posts and (cough, cough) days on the forum from detection.

Yeah, that's what confounds me. It'd seem that someone with 100 posts in the last month who hadn't been banned would be recognized by the software as nonspamming by dint of not being banned, if nothing else.

I actually don't recall exactly what the thresholds are, but it is disabled once someone reaches that point -or- we whitelist the user after a post gets caught in the filter. Those thresholds could be revisited, of course, now that we have experience with it.
