Dennett believes that consciousness is an illusion. He also advocates the self-defeating notion that reason cannot be trusted. Anyone that can believe such absurdities cannot be taken seriously; although to his credit he has followed materialist philosophy to its logical extreme.

Facepalm Bolding mine. Seriously? You have to be industrial-grade ignorant to not know of any writings about this. Or do these kind of writings not penetrate you bubble of ignorance? BTW, I studied Induction and the Scientific Method when I was still a believer. If you take the view that we can't "know" anything because you misunderstand Dennet, maybe you should just turn in every electronic device you own and go live in a monastery.

LOL< he's not, just an industrial grade liar for christ.  Inevitably, you'll find that these little outbursts are theater.  He feels the compulsion every now and again.

Not to say there's evidence that refutes religious claims, because there was never any evidence for those claims in the first place.

But as a person who loves arguing, I've always wanted to know what it is that makes a person religious. They've always infuriated me to the very core of my being since I was in my early teens, and I do not understand what it is about them that makes them so stubborn and stupid. I realize that I shouldn't hate them, that it would be like hating a mentally retarded person, but if a mentally retarded person had the ability to try to challenge you using mature vocabulary and impose their laws on society, maybe it would be just as annoying.

Thank you for your inquiry, sir.  IMO, J Anderson Thomson's Why we believe in gods: A concise guide to the science of faith may be of interest to you.  Live long and prosper.

I am VERY religious. I pray often, go to church often. I am an active member of the Lutheran community. I think that honestly, (no wishy washy theological bias), it has to do with two things:
1) where you are born (what the dominant religion is, or which religions are accepted by society)
2) your upbringing. Some families and countries in general have a culture that is more religious than others.
I know my family was very religious, and although most Poles are Catholic, the Lutheran faith has many similarities. We all talk about God and similar concepts, so it makes sense that religion is integral in my life.
Bonus: people like to have answers to things, and religion does answer questions (even if according to you, the answers are wrong) people like an answer better than no answer.
