Why on earth would you need the option to turn the passenger airbag off?

Over here they are a kind of Russian roulette device for children and short people. You don't want to use it on just anyone. The ejector seat is a good alternative. My car turns the passenger airbag off when no one's sitting in the passenger seat. Replacing/repacking an airbag after a fender bender can be expensive.

Having the passenger side airbag in a truck kill a three year old is also quite expensive, for the manufacturer. You don't really think the car companies care if you have to replace one of their overpriced safety features, do you?

Yeah I guess I'm giving Subaru too much credit. I can't actually manually turn mine off though. It's a weight sensor that sets the seatbelt alarm off if I have my backpack on the seat with a laptop in it.
