Quote:Trump’s budget seen as ‘slap in the face’ to rural voters who elected him

Quote: WASHINGTON — Two of farmers' most powerful Republican advocates in the Senate slammed President Donald Trump's proposal Tuesday to slash crop insurance, warning those and other budget cuts would badly wound one of the president's most loyal constituencies.

Voters who live in rural areas gave Trump a 61-34 percent advantage over Democrat Hillary Clinton in November, according to network exit polls. Kansans voted overwhelmingly for Trump, by 56-36 percent.

Serves you right.

I'd laugh, if it wasn't so painful. Sad

Not to put too fine a point on this, but federal crop insurance can actually be a tough sell in some rural areas.

I'm aware it is subsidized and therefore I eagerly purchase it. Even unsubsidized, it stabilizes farm income from year to year, and that is a GOOD thing. Even my farm manager was reluctant to purchase more than an intermediate coverage level till I finally got thru to him it's fucking subsidized. If your car insurance was subsidized, wouldn't you jump for the replacement car/accident forgiveness level of coverage?? Same idea . . .
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Obamacare was subsidized, too.  Why didn't these shitheads jump all over it?

Most farmers (like my parents) are too stupid to understand that subsidies are a form of socialism.  In addition to crop insurance, they are also too stupid to know that when the government steps in to purchase agricultural surpluses such as cheese or milk,  virtually everyone involved is sucking off the socialism teat.  From the farmer who keeps producing as much milk as possible whether the market needs it or not, to the kids at school drinking milk from one of those little cartons.

I'm not against this at all.  I understand all to well that without these socialist "protections" we would have almost no farmers which would hurt everyone.  But.. these assholes overwhelming vote against their self interest and are angry hypocrites when some other group is afforded the same protections.

And how many farms/farmers does the government want?

Noodge the subsidies down a bit and the rate of farmers folding and leaving agribusiness will increase, stabilize or increase them and the exodus from the rural wastelands will decrease.

Seems like most folks, rural and urban decry corporate mega farms, but that is where we're heading. When I retire/pass on there isn't much doubt my enterprise will be subsumed into a larger organization, there is no way an individual could step up and buy it unless they wanted a hobby farm for a tax write off and were wealthy enough to indulge their whim.

I'm also faced with deciding a strategy for the farms capitol improvements for my age 60 to whatever. Seems stupid to add big farm buildings (despite my needing them for bigger equipment) if they're just going to get bulldozed upon my demise. Same for the house, I want to reconfigure a bit, but amortizing the cost over my enjoyment of the improvements for a limited period of time changes how much I would like to spend.

BTW, corn prices today are only slightly higher than they were in 1819. I challenge the rest of you to voluntarily take a pay cut back to what you would have made 198 years ago and let's see how well you do.

You don't have an interested niece/nephew to give it to? That's what most bachelor or gay farmers do hereabouts.

Bunch of fucking morons if you ask me! I really have no sympathy for these people whatsoever. This is what happens when you vote for a person based on bigotry. What I don't understand is why people voted for this man in the first place, and why some still support him. He is clearly bad for the country, and will damage relationships with several other governments by the end of his presidency. If these people really were patriots then they would put country before party.

I have, at various times, threatened to direct the farm to be sold upon my demise and the proceeds being utilized in what could be a very long protracted and expensive lawsuit against . . .

(redacted)

It strikes me funny  Tongue

Actually, might have the proceeds pass on to an existing foundation that doles out the interest annually to causes/individuals I am in sympathy with.

Or maybe dissipate my estate by having it sent in the form of a check for $4 or so to every one in the state.  Followed during the subsequent January with a W2 form . . .
