Discipline/lack of and atheism

RE: Discipline/lack of and atheism
I don't need to self regulate. I have a wife.

You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.

I don't know. I've never had enough power to be corrupt.

I don't even want to take the legal drugs prescribed to me, much less the illegal ones. No thank you.

(June 11, 2017 at 7:08 am)Adventurer Wrote: do not keep their house tidy

Not my strongest point, I will admit. I still keep things from getting out of control, though.

(June 11, 2017 at 7:08 am)Adventurer Wrote: do not eat proper food

Now this is pure blasphemy! I may not have enough money for proper food all of the time, but I go out of my way to cook good meals whenever I can. I live for well-cooked, healthy meals.

(June 11, 2017 at 7:08 am)Adventurer Wrote: party too much

I am an extreme introvert with PTSD. Keep me away from all parties. I won't even do family gatherings in the park.

(June 11, 2017 at 7:08 am)Adventurer Wrote: have sex with multiple partners/commit to adultery whilst married with kids

I actually don't have a problem with people having multiple partners as long as everyone has agreed to it. Refer to "extreme introvert/PTSD" above, though, and I can guarantee that I have never even done that.

Cheating is still shitty, though.

(June 11, 2017 at 7:08 am)Adventurer Wrote: slacken off excessively

Guilty as charged. If I have a chance, I will enjoy life to its fullest.

And FYI, I don't give a damn about gaining the approval of religious folks about any of this. Tell them to get a new hobby or something.
I don't believe you. Get over it.

(June 11, 2017 at 7:08 am)Adventurer Wrote: I need someone to break stereotypes that atheists are far from disciplined due to their 'lack of faith but also fear in God' as an agent in governing individual discipline. Theists have often argued that atheists are corrupt, drug too much, do not keep their house tidy, do not eat proper food, party too much, have sex with multiple partners/commit to adultery whilst married with kids and slacken off excessively.

I would like to hear about atheists and how they do with self-discipline, self-regulation and responsibility as well as atheist parents who regulate discipline on their kids.

Regardless of the definition of atheism, I'd like to hear from you atheists as humans examples of discipline you do develop and regulate in yourselves (and if parents, on your children).

I am an atheist of moderate to at times rigorous discipline but I won't tell - I'd like to hear a substantial amount of examples from you before I may tell mine. I'm just sick of being ostracised, ridiculed and laughed at by many atheists for being 'too weird, religious and stuff' when I exhibit rigorous self-discipline and regulation and instead being told to 'loosen up' too frequently.

Let's see...

Tried cannabis a few times, not my thing. Don't drink alcohol, nor do any other drugs.

My house is 'lived in' but I'm not a slob.

My diet is probably in the top 10% of healthy diets. I am 60 years old, and have 11% body fat. My doctor just told me that my diet related blood tests, blood pressure and pulse rate are that of healthy 30 year old.

I've had multiple sexual partners when I was younger, not sure what the big deal is. But now, I have been a monogamous, committed relationship with the same woman for 12 years.

As far as self discipline, here are a few examples:

With only having a 2 year college degree, though self study, I have worked my way into the type of IT job, with associated skills and responsibilities, that usually require a master's degree.

As I stated earlier, I work out several times a week, in order to keep myself in shape.

At the age of 60, I surf several times a week. I surf on short boards.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

  • I drink alcohol, but not every day and generally only 1 serving. On special occasions, 2-3 times a year, I may have 3 glasses of wine; that's the most I ever drink.  I also decided when I got my driver's license that I would never drink and drive, and in the 15+ years I've been driving I've never violated that rule.
  • Not interested in any form of illicit drugs, and I've never smoked tobacco.
  • My house mortgage and car loan are both paid in full.  I have 1 credit card that's usually paid off every month with no missed payments.  Utility bills are all current.  Savings and investments are by auto-withdrawals twice a month, and in total I'm putting away about 25% of my take-home pay.
  • Attendance record at work is close to 100%, and I'm usually in the office 15 minutes before start time.  On the rare occasion that I am late, usually  because of a bus problem, I make up the missed time.  Also regularly on time for band practices and performances, for music lessons, and for other group activities.
  • Not currently in a relationship, but I have a strong preference for monogamy.
  • I have arthritic knee and foot joints that make it painful to exercise, but I like to do some sort of outdoors activity on Sundays (a long walk in the warm weather, snowshoeing in the wintertime).  Sometimes I go to the gym or go swimming, and in the summer I'm out working in the garden several days a week.
  • House is mostly tidy, except for a room currently being renovated.  Dishes and laundry are done regularly.
  • I do like to eat out now and then, but most meals are prepared at home from scratch.  Good selection of healthy stuff in the pantry, and I keep on top of expiry dates and clear out old stuff regularly.  Supper leftovers usually get taken for lunch the next day.  Usual beverages are black coffee, tea with a bit of milk (no sugar in either of them), or tap water (plain or with a squeeze of lemon).
The only major place where I need to improve is getting to bed at a reasonable hour, and that's been a problem for me since I was a child.

I'm not disciplined enough to keep good records.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Not really. I netted like $40.
